Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), is defined as an alteration in brain function, caused by an external force.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), An acquired brain injury is an injury to the brain that has occurred after or during birth. By definition every TBI could be considered an acquired brain injury. However, acquired brain injuries are typically considered any injury that is not traumatic. Examples of acquired brain injuries can include, stroke, anoxic periods where the brain is deprived of oxygen for whatever reason, tumours, electric shock or lightening strikes.

What happens after a Brain Injury?

Physical issues may include hearing loss, headaches, seizures, dizziness, blurred vision, loss of sense of smell or taste, reduced strength, sensation and coordination in the body, arms and legs.

Cognitive ( thinking) issues may include trouble concentrating when there are distractions, e.g. noisy environments or when doing two things at once. Issues may also include poor recent memory or learning new things may become difficult. A person may have trouble starting tasks or setting goals to complete tasks. Often planning and organising is an effort. A person may have difficulty solving problems and they may react impulsively to situations.

How can an occupational therapist’s help?

We help you find solutions to the problems that interfere with your ability to do the things that are important to you. This can include, teaching you new ways of doing things, adapting equipment or materials you use or making changes to your environment to give you the best chance of success.  We know about cognition and physical limitations imposed after a brain injury. Our role is to support you to participate in activities and occupations that mean something to you.  We also provide advice and education to members of your family or people who support you, to ensure they have the best chance of giving you appropriate help and guidance.
